Cyber Security Checklist

Cyber security focuses on protecting computers, networks, programs and data from theft or destruction.

Here's a checklist to help you get started:

• Set your computer to auto-lock via the screensaver when it's unattended.

• Enable your smart phone's pin code to prevent unauthorised access.

• Use a cable lock to secure your notebook and prevent theft.

• Set appropriate privacy options for all your social networking accounts.

• Use a strong password for your login accounts and do not re-use old passwords.

• Respond to system prompts to update your software and restart your computer occasionally to ensure updates are completed.

• Enable tracking on your smart phone so that you can find it when it's misplaced. Android and iOS have free tracker built in. So they only need to enable.

• Enable encryption on your portable devices if possible to secure sensitive data.

• Back up your data to an external hard drive regularly to prevent accidental data loss.

"Jailbreak" and "Root" RISKS

"Jailbreaking" your IOS phone or "Rooting" your Android phone lets you install custom software by bypassing the software limitations set by the manufacturer.

Please note that jailbreaking or rooting has the following risks.

• If your jailbreak or rooting attempt fails, your smart phone could end up unable to start up permanently.

• The warranty of the phone will be void and the manufacturer will no longer cover for any damages.

• Your phone's security defences will be compromised and it will become more vulnerable to security attacks and to malware, trojans and viruses.

Staff VPN Setup Guide

The Staff Campus VPN and Staff Internet VPN allow staff to access the NP intranet and NPAL2 services on NP wireless network and internet respectively.

Below are some useful guides for configuring and setting up your web browsers to connect to the Staff VPN.

Common PC Labs NOW at Blk 37 Level 5

Take note that the Common PC Labs at Block 46 Level 2 is being relocated to Block 37 Level 5.

Staff and students may use the new facility when the term starts.
