Important Tips for Bitlocker

To better protect files in your computer's hard drive, Windows computers that are purchased after 2012 and support the Bitlocker encryption software need to have their hard disks encrypted. If your computer is already Bitlocker-encrypted, below are some important tips to note:

  • Back up your Bitlocker's C drive recovery key to your personal email so that you have an alternate access to your recovery key when your USB hard disk is not with you.

  • Do not force-shutdown your computer by holding the power button for 5 seconds. Doing this may corrupt the Bitlocker partition and risk losing all your data.

  • Sometimes new Microsoft updates will install right after you shut down your computer. Do not disrupt this update process as you may corrupt the Bitlocker partition and risk losing all your data.

  • Back up your data frequently to minimize the data loss in the event of a system crash, Bitlocker's corruption or hard disk failure.

Avoid Christmas Scams

As Christmas is near, cyber criminals will take advantage of this festive season to target online shoppers. Protect yourself as you go online by:

  • Verify any email claiming to be shipping notification of your orders before you provide your personal information.

  • Think twice before submitting payment if the deal seems too good to be true.

  • Avoid clicking on links in junk emails that offer low-price travel, hotel or airfare deals.

  • Check your credit card statements to ensure that there are no 'extra' charges for your online purchases.

  • Beware of electronic Christmas cards which require you to install programs for viewing them as they could be harmful malware or viruses.

  • Double-check the official URL of any charity website before making an online donation.

  • Beware of free thumb-drive giveaways as they could be used by hackers to distribute malware to compromise your computers.

NPal2 Frequently Asked Questions

Recently, there are several enquiries by staff encountering issues with the NPal2 "Run and Launch". Please take note of the pre-requisites for the "Run and Launch":

  • There should only be one instance of Java installed.

  • Staff should connect to only one network. For example, when using the staff wired connection, the wireless network should be disconnected.

  • Staff are required to login to the NPNet domain using their own NPNet accounts.

  • "Run and Launch" is not compatible with Macintosh Operating Systems.
