The NRIC number is a permanent and irreplaceable unique identifier assigned to Singapore citizens and permanent residents.

It is considered personal data as the individual can be identified from it, and can be used to unlock large amounts of information relating to the individual. 

Staff are required to limit the use of NRIC unless it is needed to accurately establish the individual’s identity for safety or security reasons.

Whenever possible, events registration should not collect participants’ NRIC number unless it is required to accurately establish their identity.  Possible alternatives are:

• Last 5 digits of NRIC
• Business email address or mobile number
• NP-issued ID

NP students often undergo internship or training with companies, including healthcare institutions.  As part of their reports requirements, staff should not require students to keep records of personal data, such as NRIC, medical conditions, home address, photos, etc.

Do remind students of potential breach of privacy or confidentiality when taking photos of individuals with their mobile phones.   When taking a photo of/with an individual, they should check:

• The purpose of taking the photo?
• Has the individual given consent for the photo to be taken and the use of the photo? 

Example 2: Taking a photo of a company’s internal records (paper or screen)

• Is the student authorised to “extract” and use this information?
• Does student have consent to use the information for the specified purpose? 

Staff can help by reminding students of the above before sending them out to companies on their internship or training assignments.

In a connected world today, mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets often contain contacts and some personal information. With the prevalence of cybercrime, it is important to secure these devices as they are often connected to the Internet.

Keep your Devices Up to Date

Having the latest version of the mobile operating system (e.g. IOS or Android) is the best defense against viruses, malware and other online threats. Outdated versions contain vulnerabilities that are frequently exploited by attackers.

Disable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth When Not in Use

Turn off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth when you are not using them to prevent unauthorized wireless access.

Enabling the remote wipe feature on your mobile phone and tablet so that you have the ability to protect the data should the device be stolen or lost.
